Over 25,000 Cybercrime Cases Reported in Gurugram Alone in 2024

Gurugram (Haryana) :  Cyber fraud is emerging as one of the biggest threats in Haryana, with the state recording losses of more than ₹850 crore due to digital scams in 2024. Gurugram alone accounted for nearly 20% of the total cases, making it one of the most affected districts. The figures were shared by SI Vikas Beniwal of PS Cyber Manesar during the nationwide awareness initiative “Knock Out Digital Fraud,” jointly organised by Haryana Police and Bajaj Finance Limited (BFL) at Government College, Sidharwali. Around 250 students and faculty members attended the event.
Highlighting the rising menace of digital crime, SI Beniwal explained the key reasons people fall prey to fraud: ignorance, greed, and fear. “Fraudsters use tactics like digital arrest, investment scams and task-based fraud to psychologically manipulate victims and wipe out their lifelong savings. If anyone asks for money, bank details, or OTP—consider it a red flag. Awareness is the only real protection,” he warned.
He added that Gurugram alone recorded more than 25,000 cybercrime cases in 2024. Stressing immediate response in case of cyber fraud, he said the first three hours are considered the ‘golden period,’ during which prompt reporting significantly increases the chances of recovering lost funds. Haryana Police has made 5,000 arrests in cyber fraud cases so far.
During 2024–25, Haryana Police recovered ₹100 crore lost to cybercrime. Nationwide, digital fraud losses have crossed ₹22,800 crore—nearly 40% higher than the previous year.
Addressing the event, ASI Rajeshpal from PS Cyber Manesar said, “As India progresses, cyber fraud has turned into an economic warfare tactic. Every citizen must remain alert. Avoiding suspicious links and tempting offers is the first step toward protection.”
PS Cyber Manesar’s ASI Satyendra Kumar explained how cybercrime networks operate like organised businesses across the country. “With rising digital dependence, vulnerabilities are also increasing. If you suspect any fraud, dial 1930 immediately. Early action can halt transactions. Avoid APK files, suspicious links and refrain from linking the same number across multiple platforms,” he advised.
Government College Sidharwali’s Professor P.K. Malik emphasised the role of youth in combating cybercrime, saying, “Young people can play a crucial role in spreading awareness. By staying informed and alert, they can safeguard themselves, their families and their communities.”
Bajaj Finance Limited, India’s largest private NBFC, is conducting a nationwide financial literacy and cyber fraud awareness campaign. The initiative aligns with the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) 2024 Fraud Risk Management guidelines, which stress early detection, accountability and public participation to strengthen digital safety.
The program offered essential guidance on protecting personal and sensitive information—avoiding OTP or PIN sharing, staying away from suspicious emails, SMS, links, QR codes and refraining from downloading apps from unknown sources. Interactive workshops, digital awareness drives and community outreach activities were also conducted.
This nationwide initiative further alerts citizens against fake social media accounts, WhatsApp groups and fraudulent websites impersonating financial institutions to trap unsuspecting users.
