Vizhinjam International Seaport: India’s First Mega Transshipment Container Terminal Nears Completion
Thiruvananthapuram ( Kerala) : The Vizhinjam International Seaport, developed and operated by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), is set to redefine India’s maritime landscape as the country’s first Mega Transshipment Container Terminal. Designed as a world-class, future-ready port, Vizhinjam is the only transshipment hub in the Indian subcontinent that offers a strategic geographical advantage.
Located centrally along India’s coastline, Vizhinjam sits just 10 nautical miles (approximately 19 kilometers) from one of the world’s busiest east-west international shipping lanes—connecting Europe, the Persian Gulf, Southeast Asia, and the Far East. This proximity ensures reduced deviation for cargo vessels and enhances efficiency in global trade movement.
The port’s state-of-the-art infrastructure and deep natural draft make it capable of accommodating ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs), placing it in direct competition with global transshipment hubs like Colombo, Singapore, and Dubai. With its operational advantages, Vizhinjam is expected to significantly reduce India’s dependence on foreign ports for transshipment, boost exports, and catalyze regional economic growth.
As the port nears operational readiness, it marks a major milestone in India’s ambition to become a leading player in global maritime trade.
