Grand Janaki Temple to Be Built in Sitamarhi: CM Nitish Kumar Unveils Master Plan, Political Significance Ahead of Bihar Elections
Patna/Sitamarhi (Bihar): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday made a long-awaited and culturally significant announcement, confirming that the master plan for the comprehensive development of Punouradham in Sitamarhi has been finalized. The site is traditionally believed to be the birthplace of Goddess Sita, making this move not only religiously important but also politically strategic, as it comes ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.
Sharing design images of the proposed temple on X (formerly Twitter), CM Nitish Kumar wrote:
“I am pleased to announce that the architectural design for a grand temple dedicated to Mata Janaki (Goddess Sita) at Punouradham in Sitamarhi is now ready. A dedicated trust has been formed to expedite the construction process. The temple will be a matter of pride and honor for the entire state of Bihar.”
Blend of Tradition and Modernity
According to the government’s released plan, the Janaki temple will be constructed in traditional Indian temple architectural style. The project also includes several modern amenities for pilgrims and visitors:
Comfortable dharamshalas (rest houses) and relaxation zones
A prayer hall and cultural stage
A museum showcasing the cultural heritage of Janaki and Mithila
Large parking areas
A grand entrance gateway and a sanctum sanctorum designed to enhance spiritual experience
Trust Formed for Speed, Transparency and Quality
CM Kumar announced the formation of a newly constituted trust comprising religious leaders, administrative officers, and architectural experts to oversee the project and ensure its timely and transparent execution. The budget and tender process will be announced soon.
Religious, Cultural and Economic Impact
Punouradham holds sacred significance in Hindu tradition as the birthplace of Goddess Sita, wife of Lord Rama. The Bihar government now aims to develop this revered site into a national and international religious tourism hub. The project is expected to boost tourism, generate local employment, and benefit regional businesses.
Local Enthusiasm and Support
Residents of Sitamarhi, particularly the Punouradham region, have responded with great enthusiasm, having long demanded the construction of a grand temple. Locals view the project as not only spiritually uplifting but also as a transformative opportunity for the area’s economic growth.
Political Message Behind the Move?
The announcement comes just months before the Bihar Assembly elections, making the timing politically noteworthy. After the grand inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya earlier this year, the declaration of a Janaki Temple in Sitamarhi is being seen as a calculated move by the BJP-JDU alliance to connect emotionally with the Hindu electorate and bolster their position ahead of the polls.
