Ahead of Elections, Nitish Kumar’s Big Move: 125 Units of Free Electricity for Every Household in Bihar

Patna (Bihar): In a major pre-election announcement aimed at providing relief to the common people, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday declared that starting August 1, 2025, all domestic consumers in the state will receive up to 125 units of electricity free of cost. The scheme is expected to directly benefit 16.7 million (1.67 crore) families across the state.

Sharing the announcement on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), CM Nitish Kumar wrote:
“We have always ensured affordable electricity for all. Now, we have decided that from August 1, 2025—starting with the July billing cycle—no domestic consumer in the state will be charged for the first 125 units of electricity.”

Major Focus on Solar Energy

The Chief Minister also outlined a long-term plan focused on solar energy. He said that over the next three years, solar energy systems will be installed on rooftops or nearby public spaces with the consent of consumers.

“Under the Kutir Jyoti Yojana, the state government will bear the full cost of solar installations for extremely poor families. For others, the government will provide substantial assistance,” he added. The government aims to generate up to 10,000 megawatts of solar energy as part of this initiative.

Support from Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary

Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary also praised the move, stating:
“This decision will provide relief to millions of families. Through solar energy, the state will not only improve electricity availability but also move toward energy self-reliance.”

A Politically Strategic Move

Political analysts believe the timing of the announcement—just months ahead of the October-November 2025 Assembly elections—indicates a clear strategy by the NDA government to deliver direct benefits to the public.

The scheme is being seen as a significant public welfare initiative, one that not only offers financial relief to the poor and middle-class families but also has the potential to transform Bihar’s energy landscape through sustainable power generation.
