Andhra Pradesh: NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Gas Leak Deaths at Pharma Waste Plant
New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports regarding the death of two workers and the injury of another due to a toxic gas leak at a pharmaceutical waste treatment plant in Anakapalle district, Andhra Pradesh. The incident occurred during the night shift on June 11, 2025. According to reports, the workers lost consciousness after being exposed to poisonous gas, allegedly released during the waste treatment process. One of the victims remains hospitalized.
Taking serious note of the matter, the NHRC observed that, if true, it raises a grave issue of human rights violation. The Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh and the Superintendent of Police, Anakapalle, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.
The report is expected to include the health condition of the injured worker and details of any compensation provided to the victims’ families and the injured individual.
