Centre Takes Concrete Steps to Curb Vehicular Pollution in Delhi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off a fleet of electric buses under the Delhi government’s initiative aimed at promoting long-term development and green urban mobility. The Prime Minister emphasized that this initiative would significantly contribute to the creation of a clean and green Delhi. He further stated that the move would enhance the ‘ease of living’ for the people of the national capital.

In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi wrote:
“Building a Clean and Green Delhi! Flagged off electric buses under Delhi Government’s initiative to promote sustainable development and green urban transport. This will also enhance the ease of living for Delhi’s citizens.”

Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on Wednesday said that the central government is seriously addressing the issue of rising vehicular pollution in Delhi and is continuously working to control it. He stated that the joint initiative with the Delhi government to introduce smart EV buses, electric buses, and hydrogen-powered buses is a major step toward pollution mitigation.

“The central government is continuously working to resolve the issue of vehicular pollution in Delhi… The campaign to introduce smart EV buses, electric buses, and hydrogen buses in coordination with the Delhi government is a significant move toward reducing vehicular emissions,” said Yadav.

He further noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s campaign ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ (One Tree in Mother’s Name), millions of trees have been planted, greatly benefiting environmental conservation. The minister announced that the 2025 edition of this campaign has now been launched with the goal of increasing green cover across the country, especially in Delhi to fight pollution.

“This campaign will not only make Delhi greener but will also play a crucial role in improving the city’s air quality and curbing vehicle-related pollution,” he added, urging citizens to actively participate in the initiative to protect the environment.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also shared her views on the occasion, saying,
“This is a moment of great joy for Delhi. We had planned to shift our public transport system to EVs, and under this initiative, 400 buses were earlier dedicated to the city. Today, 200 more buses were flagged off by Prime Minister Modi. These buses are highly comfortable. By the end of this year, we aim to bring 280 more EV buses to Delhi, and by 2027, we plan to transition the entire public transport fleet to electric. We will also introduce a new EV policy soon.”

The joint effort reflects the growing commitment of both central and state governments toward a cleaner, greener, and healthier Delhi.
