Constitution Club of India Election Turns Political Battleground: Two BJP Heavyweights Face Off on August 12

New Delhi: The upcoming election of the Constitution Club of India is shaping up to be a high-stakes political showdown, with two prominent leaders from the same party—Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—pitted against each other. On one side is Rajiv Pratap Rudy, a four-time Lok Sabha MP and current Member of Parliament, who has held the post of Secretary (Administration) of the Club’s Governing Council for the past 25 years.

This time, however, Rudy is being challenged by fellow BJP leader and former Union Minister Dr. Sanjeev Balyan, who hails from Western Uttar Pradesh and has gradually built considerable influence in Delhi’s political corridors.

All Eyes on August 12: A Close Contest
The prestigious election is scheduled for August 12, 2025, and will witness participation from around 1,200 members eligible to vote. The contest is expected to be extremely competitive and reputation-driven, as both candidates are senior and influential figures within the BJP.

Who Gets to Vote?
Unlike routine organizational elections, this one boasts a high-profile voter list. Prominent leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, Opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge, and veteran BJP leader LK Advani are all members and eligible to vote.

Members of both houses of Parliament—Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha—can become members of the Constitution Club of India. The Governing Council’s term is five years.

Political Prestige at Stake
While Rajiv Pratap Rudy brings to the table his decades-long administrative experience and leadership, Dr. Sanjeev Balyan is projecting a fresh perspective and regional balance as part of his appeal.

Political observers believe this election goes beyond the boundaries of an institutional leadership contest and is being seen as a test of internal dynamics within the BJP. The outcome on August 12 will determine not just who leads the Club administratively, but also who commands greater influence within party circles.

More Than Just a Club Election
The Constitution Club of India election is not just about leadership in a constitutional body—it’s a window into how vibrant internal democracy remains within the BJP. With heavyweights involved and high political prestige at stake, all eyes are now set on the August 12 showdown.
