Democratic Rights vs. Security in Kashmir: An Analysis of the Doda and Srinagar Incidents

Srinagar (Jammu & Kashmir): Recent events in Doda and Srinagar clearly indicate that the political situation in Kashmir remains highly delicate. Opposition parties are attempting to garner public sympathy by framing government actions as an “attack on democracy,” while the administration maintains that security and peace are of utmost priority.
On one hand, leaders like Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah describe these measures as violations of democratic rights. On the other hand, the administration asserts that any disruption of law and order cannot be tolerated. These developments have sparked renewed debate in the Valley, bringing the issue of “democratic rights versus security” back into focus.
The cases of Sanjay Singh and Mehraaj Malik serve as reminders that politics in Kashmir is not merely about electoral competition but is directly linked to maintaining peace and security. While the administrative detention of Mehraaj Malik was justified from a law-and-order perspective, the subsequent political theatrics highlight that some forces are willing to exploit Kashmir’s delicate social fabric for their political gain.
Being an elected representative requires more than just winning elections; conduct and decorum are equally important. If the allegations of abusive language against administrative officials and women against Mehraaj Malik are true, it is not only morally reprehensible but also tarnishes the dignity of public office. A legislator’s duty is to set an example for society, not to sully public life with unbecoming behavior.
Similarly, Sanjay Singh’s act of climbing the door and arguing with police after being denied a meeting with Farooq Abdullah at the Srinagar Circuit House appeared more like a political stunt than an exercise in maturity. In a democratic system, there are numerous peaceful and dignified ways to register protest, yet public theatrics by a Member of Parliament not only question their seriousness but also escalate tensions in sensitive Kashmir.
