Fortis Gurugram Promotes Awareness on Corneal Blindness During Eye Donation Fortnight
Gurugram: Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI), Gurugram, marked the National Eye Donation Fortnight (August 25 – September 8) with over 500 individuals pledging to donate their eyes. The campaign saw increased public participation compared to previous years, reflecting greater awareness about corneal blindness. As part of the campaign, Fortis organized a seminar to dispel myths around eye donation and set up registration booths in its Eye Institute OPD. A geriatric public health event also encouraged hundreds of senior citizens to pledge.
According to Dr. Parul Sharma, Principal Director & HOD, Fortis Eye Institute, India has nearly 1.1 million people suffering from corneal blindness, with 25,000 new cases added annually. The country needs 200,000 donor corneas each year, while only half that number is available. She emphasized that public participation is key to bridging this gap. Challenges like social stigma, religious beliefs, lack of awareness, and infrastructural issues still hinder eye donations. Fortis is strengthening its Hospital Cornea Retrieval Program (HCRP) to streamline the process. Youth participation and social media have played a key role in spreading awareness.
Facility Director Yashpal Rawat reaffirmed Fortis’ commitment to restoring vision and enhancing lives through dedicated efforts by corneal surgeons and counselors.
