Historic Rise in Tiger Population in Uttar Pradesh: Yogi Government’s Efforts Bearing Fruit

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) :  Uttar Pradesh has witnessed a historic rise in its tiger population. While the number stood at 173 in 2018, it increased to 222 by 2022. This achievement stands as a direct testament to the Yogi Government’s consistent efforts and wildlife conservation policies.

The surge in numbers has been largely attributed to focused conservation efforts and advanced monitoring technologies in regions like Dudhwa, Pilibhit, Amangarh, and Ranipur Tiger Reserves. The state government has placed special emphasis on M-STRIPES patrolling, habitat improvement, and public participation.

In 2019, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched the ‘Bagh Mitra’ (Tiger Friend) programme to train villagers and integrate them into the monitoring system. In 2023, the initiative was expanded with the launch of the ‘Bagh Mitra App,’ enabling villagers to directly send photos and location-based alerts to the forest department—ensuring swift and accurate action.

So far, 120 trained ‘Bagh Mitra’ volunteers in Pilibhit alone are actively assisting in forest monitoring.

On the occasion of International Tiger Day, special programmes such as walkathons, awareness rallies, and a felicitation ceremony for ‘Bagh Mitras’ are being held across the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself has praised Uttar Pradesh’s tiger conservation model, which has garnered both national and international recognition.

This achievement is not just a milestone in biodiversity preservation but also a shining example of how coordinated efforts by the government, departments, and the public can lead to successful wildlife protection.
