New Delhi : Wakefit.co has unveiled the 9th edition of its flagship annual survey, The Great Indian Sleep Scorecard (GISS) 2026, offering a comprehensive, data-driven insight into the changing sleep habits of urban Indians. The report highlights a worsening national sleep crisis, driven by increasing digital dependency, late-night routines, and rising workplace fatigue.

City Rankings: Chennai Tops, Mumbai at Bottom

The report ranks major Indian cities based on sleep health indicators such as bedtime discipline, insomnia concerns, wake-up patterns, and daytime fatigue:

  • Chennai – Most Disciplined Sleepers: Lowest late bedtime (48.8%) and late wake-up rate (23.8%), though 61.9% still feel unrested.

  • Hyderabad – Balanced Sleep City: Moderate sleep patterns, with 42% late sleepers and 31% reporting insomnia concerns.

  • Gurugram – Resilient Sleepers: Younger workforce managing demanding schedules with relatively healthier sleep habits.

  • Bengaluru – The Sleep Paradox: Fast-paced work culture impacts rest, with over half not feeling refreshed.

  • Mumbai – Most Sleep-Deprived City: Highest late bedtime (76.5%) and fatigue levels, with nearly 60% feeling sleepy at work.

Key Findings: Digital Habits and Work Pressure Driving Sleep Loss

The GISS 2026 report underscores several worrying nationwide trends:

  • Phone addiction disrupting sleep:
87.6% of respondents use their phones before bedtime, making it the most common sleep disruptor. Social media scrolling, binge-watching, and prolonged screen exposure are major contributors.

  • Rising insomnia concerns:
33.4% of urban Indians fear they may have insomnia, indicating growing anxiety around sleep health.

  • Workplace fatigue on the rise:
57.8% report feeling sleepy during work hours—a 7.8% increase from 2025. Fatigue is most pronounced in Delhi (64.4%), Bengaluru (61.7%), and Mumbai (59.2%).

  • Lack of restful sleep:
Nearly half (48.7%) of respondents do not feel rested upon waking, with the highest levels in Mumbai, Chennai, and Delhi.

  • Late-night culture deepening:
Only 12% maintain a healthy pre-10 p.m. bedtime, while nearly 60% sleep after 11 p.m. About 29.1% experience compressed sleep cycles, averaging just 5–6 hours of sleep.

Sleep Health Worsening Year-on-Year

The report indicates that India’s sleep health is either stagnating or deteriorating:

  • Late bedtimes increased by 1.8%

  • Daytime sleepiness rose by 7.8%

  • Insomnia concerns remain persistently high

  • Pre-sleep phone usage continues at elevated levels

Growing Awareness Around Better Sleep

Encouragingly, awareness about improving sleep quality is rising:

  • 35.8% believe a better mattress or sleep surface can help

  • 34.8% suggest avoiding digital devices before bedtime

  • 29.5% emphasize maintaining a consistent sleep routine

Industry Perspective

Commenting on the findings, Chaitanya Ramalingegowda, Co-founder and Director of Wakefit.co, said that lifestyle changes, digital habits, and demanding work schedules are significantly shaping sleep patterns in India. He noted that while awareness is improving, late-night habits and workplace fatigue remain major challenges.
