Major Boost for West Bengal: PM Modi Lays Foundation Stone for CGD Project in Alipurduar and Cooch Behar
Alipurduar/Cooch Behar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the City Gas Distribution (CGD) project in Alipurduar and Cooch Behar districts of West Bengal. With an estimated investment of over ₹1,010 crore, the project aims to provide clean and safe natural gas to households, businesses, and vehicles in the region.
Key Features of the CGD Project:
Around 19 CNG stations will be set up.
Over 2.5 lakh households will be connected with Piped Natural Gas (PNG).
More than 100 commercial establishments and industries will benefit from PNG connections.
CNG availability for vehicles in the area will be ensured.
Prime Minister Modi’s Statement:
“A short while ago, we launched the City Gas Distribution project for Alipurduar and Cooch Behar from this very stage. This project will provide clean, safe, and affordable piped gas to over 2.5 lakh homes. It will not only eliminate the need to buy LPG cylinders but also ensure a reliable and safe gas supply to families.”
He added:
“The development of Bengal is the foundation of India’s future. Today marks the laying of yet another strong brick in that foundation.”
Why This Project Matters:
Environmentally Friendly: Natural gas burns cleaner than traditional fossil fuels, helping reduce pollution.
Convenience & Safety: PNG supply will reduce dependence on LPG cylinders and provide households with a continuous and secure gas source.
Economic Growth: The availability of PNG and CNG will boost local industries and create new employment opportunities.
Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the project is part of his government’s broader vision of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” (Together with all, development for all). It also strengthens efforts to develop the Northeast and Eastern India, which have been a priority under his leadership.
This initiative aligns with the government’s long-term agenda to promote clean energy across the country and contribute towards achieving the goal of an energy-secure and self-reliant India.
