Moti Nagar SHO writes to DDA on safety from stray dog at parks

New Delhi : Amidst the growing menace of stray dog bite incidents in the city, including on streets and in parks, Station House Officer (SHO) Moti Nagar has written a letter to DDA inquiring about security engagement, DDA protocols, responsibility of control of stray dogs in DDA Park, Shivaji Marg, Najafgarh Road among others.

In a letter dated July 4, 2025, SHO Moti Nagar Inspector Varun Dalal wrote to Director (Horticulture) N/w, Deihi Development Authority, Vikas Minar, ITO, New Delhi highlighting a recent incident involving a stray dog bite at the DDA Park located on Shivaji Marg, Najafgarh Road, Delhi in which an individual succumbed to injuries.

In the letter, the SHO has sought information from the DDA official about security in the park, DDA protocols for controlling the presence of stray dogs, DDA official responsible for park supervision and operations and CCTV installation and maintenance.

The letter asks, “Has the DDA engaged any security agency to ensure the safety and security of visitors at the DDA Park, Shivaji Marg and whether a formal agreement has been executed between the DDA and the security agency?”

Further, the letter raises questions on DDA protocols and officials assigned for supervision and operations.

“As per the agreement or standard DDA protocols, who is responsible for controlling the presence of stray dogs and ensuring that such threats are mitigated; and is there any DDA official assigned, specifically to supervise and oversee operations at the DDA Park’ Shivaji Marg?”

Citing safety and well-being of the citizens using public spaces like parks, the letter additionally asked the DDA about the installation and maintenance of CCTV camera in the park.

The SHO has requested an urgent attention and prompt response considering the safety of the public at large.

Incidentally, on Monday July 28, 2025, the Supreme Court took a suo motu cognisance of the rising stray dog bite incidents in the Capital. The SC, while referring to news report, said hundreds of dog bites in Delhi and nearby areas are leading to rabies and termed the situation very alarming.

The last stray dog census was held in Delhi in 2016. As per estimates, the number of stray dogs is expected to have reached around 70 lakhs by now.
