Mumbra Train Accident: Overcrowding Causes Passengers to Fall from Train, 8 Injured
Thane (Maharashtra) : A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday morning at Mumbra railway station. Due to extreme overcrowding, several passengers fell from a local train heading towards CSMT (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus). According to Central Railway, eight passengers were injured in the incident and were immediately taken to a nearby hospital. Railway officials and police reached the spot soon after and have begun an investigation.
The incident also disrupted Mumbai’s local train services, causing inconvenience to commuters.
What did railway officials say?
Central Railway’s CPRO, Swapnil Dhanraj Neela, said, “We have often observed that passengers stand on the footboard or near the doors even when there is space inside the train, which increases the risk of accidents. Today, the guard of a Kasara-bound local train was the first to report that six injured passengers were lying on the down-through track. When the ambulance arrived, a total of eight injured passengers were found at the site.”
Officials stated that preliminary investigations suggest the accident occurred due to overcrowding and passengers standing carelessly at the doors.
The railway administration has urged passengers to follow safety protocols while travelling and avoid standing near the train doors.
High-level inquiry ordered
Given the seriousness of the incident, the railway authorities have ordered a special investigation. CCTV footage is being reviewed, and eyewitnesses on the track are being questioned.
This accident has once again raised serious concerns about overcrowding in Mumbai’s local trains and the overall safety of daily commuters.
