Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station Crosses Historic 150 Billion Units Power Generation Milestone

Shimla : SJVN Limited’s Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) has achieved a historic milestone by surpassing 150 billion units (BU) of cumulative power generation, reinforcing its crucial role in India’s clean energy sector and the stability of the national power grid.

Congratulating the team, Bhupender Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of SJVN, praised the efforts of the project staff for their dedication and operational excellence. NJHPS, recognized as the largest underground hydro power station in India, reached this landmark on Sunday, marking another major achievement in the country’s hydropower journey.

Celebrations were organized at the powerhouse in the presence of Bhupender Gupta and Ajay Kumar Sharma, Director (Personnel), along with senior officials of SJVN.

Addressing the gathering, Gupta noted that since its commissioning in May 2004, the Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station has consistently demonstrated outstanding operational reliability. He described the station as a cornerstone of the northern power grid, playing a vital role in delivering dependable green energy and maintaining grid stability, particularly during periods of peak demand.

Highlighting the plant’s performance over the years, Gupta said the project has achieved several remarkable benchmarks. NJHPS recorded its highest-ever annual generation of 7,610.257 million units in FY 2011–12. More recently, the station registered a record monthly generation of 1,222.170 million units in July 2024, followed by its highest-ever daily generation of 39.572 million units on August 13, 2024. These achievements reflect the plant’s ability to efficiently harness favorable hydrological conditions.

Director (Personnel) Ajay Kumar Sharma commended both present and former employees associated with the project for their contributions. He also highlighted that the project has played a significant role in fostering regional development and economic growth in the surrounding areas.

Rajeev Kapoor, Head of Project at NJHPS, expressed gratitude to the SJVN management, the Ministry of Power and the Government of Himachal Pradesh for their continued support and guidance. He also acknowledged the efforts of employees, contractors, contract workers and the local community for their unwavering cooperation in achieving the milestone.

The 150-billion-unit mark also carries significant environmental importance, as the hydropower generation has helped replace large volumes of fossil-fuel-based electricity, contributing to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and supporting India’s climate commitments.

Operated by SJVN, the Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station continues to benefit from systematic modernization, digital monitoring systems and rigorous maintenance practices. Beyond energy production, the project has also contributed to employment generation and infrastructure development in the region.

As India continues to expand its renewable energy capacity, the achievement of SJVN stands as a powerful example of engineering excellence and the strategic importance of hydropower in the country’s transition toward sustainable energy.
