New Delhi: The New Delhi World Book Fair 2026, held at Bharat Mandapam, has far surpassed the world’s largest and most renowned Frankfurt Book Fair in terms of public footfall. According to fair organisers, nearly two million visitors attended the nine-day event, making it one of the biggest book fairs in the world by audience turnout.
In comparison, the Frankfurt Book Fair 2025 recorded around 238,000 visitors, including approximately 118,500 trade professionals and 115,000 members of the general public. While Frankfurt remains the world’s largest international publishing trade fair, the sheer scale of public participation at the New Delhi World Book Fair highlights the growing reading culture in India.
Organisers attribute this massive turnout primarily to the government’s proactive promotion of the fair and the decision to allow free entry for all visitors, which encouraged people from all sections of society to attend. Over the nine days, book lovers not only explored the world of literature but also purchased books in large numbers.

Another major attraction for readers was the availability of more than 6,000 free e-books, a government-backed initiative aimed at expanding access to reading material and promoting digital literacy.
Unlike the Frankfurt Book Fair, which is largely a B2B (business-to-business) event focused on publishing professionals, the New Delhi World Book Fair is a B2C (business-to-consumer) fair, directly engaging readers, students, families, and young audiences. This distinction has played a key role in driving higher footfall in New Delhi.
Publishers have noted that the surge in visitors has also translated into a noticeable rise in interest in books, especially works by young authors. This year, books written by emerging writers dominated the stalls, with a significant presence of women authors, reflecting a positive shift in India’s literary landscape.
The unprecedented response to the New Delhi World Book Fair 2026 has raised hopes that public interest in books and reading will continue to grow in the coming years. This trend is expected not only to boost book demand and strengthen the publishing industry but also to provide a larger platform for new and diverse voices in Indian literature.
