Noida Salary Dispute: Protest Turns Violent, What Are the Workers’ Key Demands?

Noida (UP): A workers’ protest in Phase-2 of the industrial hub of Noida, near Delhi, turned into violent clashes on Monday. Thousands of workers from the Noida Special Economic Zone (NSEZ) and hosiery complex took to the streets against what they termed “systemic exploitation,” leading to tension across the area.
From Peaceful Protest to Violence
According to reports, the protest began as a peaceful sit-in demanding better wages and improved working conditions. However, the situation escalated when some protesters allegedly resorted to stone-pelting and damaged private vehicles and factory property.
As the situation spiraled out of control, heavy police deployment was made. Tear gas shells were fired and a baton charge was carried out to disperse the crowd. Given the seriousness of the situation, Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) units were also deployed on the spot.
Why Did the Workers’ Anger Erupt?
The root of the unrest lies in long-standing dissatisfaction over wages and poor working conditions.
Workers claim they are made to work 10 to 12 hours a day but receive only ₹12,000 to ₹15,000 per month. Allegations of unpaid or underpaid overtime and non-compliance with labor laws have further fueled their anger.
Key Demands of the Workers
- Wage Revision: Immediate increase in minimum wages in view of rising inflation.
- Double Pay for Overtime: Overtime work should be compensated at double the rate as per legal provisions.
- 8-Hour Work Shift: End to forced 10–12 hour shifts and ensure an 8-hour workday.
- Timely Salary and Payslips: Regular payment of wages along with proper salary slips.
- Other Benefits: Provision of bonuses, weekly holidays, and a grievance redressal mechanism.
A Major Challenge for the Administration
At present, the administration and police officials are in talks with workers’ representatives to restore normalcy.
However, tension continues to prevail in Noida’s industrial areas, and work in several factories remains disrupted. The administration now faces the challenge of balancing industrial peace while ensuring the rights of workers are protected.
This incident once again raises serious questions about labor conditions and wage structures in industrial zones, making it imperative to find a timely and effective solution.
