PM Modi’s Inspiring Conversation with Indian Astronaut Shubhangshu Shukla
New Delhi : On August 19, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a motivating interaction with India’s first international astronaut, Wing Commander Shubhangshu Shukla, discussing his recent journey to space and its profound learnings. Shukla shared the physical and mental challenges astronauts face in zero gravity, explaining how the human body and brain must adapt to new environments both in space and upon return to Earth. He emphasized the importance of Indian superfoods like moong and methi, which he successfully sprouted aboard the space station. These foods, requiring minimal space and resources, could help solve food security issues in space and potentially on Earth.
PM Modi lauded Shukla’s contributions and highlighted the significance of India’s future space missions — Gaganyaan and the Bharatiya Space Station. He expressed the need to build a strong pool of 40–50 Indian astronauts in the coming years to inspire the next generation.
Shukla also spoke about the global recognition of India’s advancements in space technology and how fellow astronauts are keen to be part of Indian missions. The conversation reflected India’s bold vision of becoming a self-reliant global leader in space research and innovation. Shukla called this mission not the end, but the true beginning of India’s space leadership.
