Prime Minister Inaugurates India’s First Vertical Lift Sea Bridge

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated India’s first vertical lift sea bridge in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, along with the launch of a new Rameswaram–Tambaram (Chennai) train service and the commissioning of a Coast Guard vessel. The newly inaugurated Pamban Sea Bridge will serve as a vital rail link between the mainland and the island of Rameswaram.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Rameswaram by air on his return journey from a successful visit to Sri Lanka. During the flight, he had an aerial view of the Ram Setu (Adam’s Bridge), a site of deep religious and cultural significance. He also virtually witnessed the Surya Tilak (solar anointment) ceremony of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya, held on the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami.

Sharing his experience on social media platform X, the Prime Minister wrote:

“On this sacred day of Ram Navami, I had the divine fortune of viewing Ram Setu from the sky while returning from Sri Lanka. By the grace of the Almighty, at that very moment, I was also blessed to witness the Surya Tilak of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya virtually. I pray that Lord Shri Ram’s blessings continue to shower upon all of us.”

The vertical lift mechanism of the new Pamban Sea Bridge marks a significant engineering achievement for Indian Railways, enabling ships to pass through while ensuring seamless train connectivity to the island of Rameswaram, a major pilgrimage site.
