Sony SAB Actors Share Their Experiences: How Traditional Costumes Deepen Their On-Screen Performances
Mumbai : Actors from Sony SAB’s popular historical and mythological shows Tenali Rama and Veer Hanuman have shared how traditional Indian costumes play a vital role in enhancing the depth of their performances. According to them, these outfits are not just garments but powerful tools that help them fully immerse into their characters and bring authenticity to storytelling. Krishna Bharadwaj, who plays the titular role in Tenali Rama, said, “The dhoti, tilak, and traditional attire connect me to the soul of the character. These elements help me transform completely into Tenali, not just in appearance but in energy and expression as well.” Nikhil Arya, who portrays the Kotwal in the same show, added, “Though my costume is quite heavy and challenging to wear, especially on non-air-conditioned sets, it adds authenticity to the character. Once I’m in costume, my dialogues and body language feel more natural and convincing.”
Aditya Redij, who plays King Krishnadevaraya in Veer Hanuman, said that the royal attire makes him feel a sense of responsibility and authority. “Wearing the traditional costume transforms the way I carry myself. It feels like I’ve truly stepped into another era,” he shared. Hunar Hali, who plays Kaikeyi in Veer Hanuman, admitted that initially it was exhausting to perform in heavy saris and elaborate headpieces. “But over time, I realized these elements symbolize Kaikeyi’s pride, power, and internal conflict. They add grace and depth to my portrayal,” she explained. Arav Chowdhary, who plays Kesari, added, “Traditional attire brings a sense of dignity and seriousness. When I wear the costume, I don’t feel like I’m acting — I feel like I am Kesari.”
The actors agree that traditional costumes go far beyond visual appeal. They serve as a bridge between performer and character, making the performance more grounded, genuine, and emotionally resonant.
