Sri Lankan Spinner Jayawickrama Banned for One Year for Anti-Corruption Code Violation

New Delhi: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has imposed a one-year ban on Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrama from all forms of cricket, with the final six months of the ban suspended. This comes after Jayawickrama admitted to violating the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Code.

In August, the ICC charged Jayawickrama with two breaches of the code. He accepted the charge of violating Article 2.4.7, which pertains to obstructing or delaying an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU). This includes concealing, tampering with, or destroying any documents or information relevant to the investigation that could serve as evidence of corrupt conduct under the code.

According to the ICC’s official release, these charges relate to international cricket and the Lanka Premier League (LPL). Jayawickrama made his international debut in a Test against Bangladesh in April 2021. He has represented Sri Lanka in five Tests, five ODIs, and five T20 matches, with his last appearance for the national team being in the 2022 home T20 series against Australia.

In the LPL 2021, Jayawickrama was part of the Jaffna Kings team that secured their second title. He played one match that season, taking two wickets. In the 2024 LPL, he played for the Dambulla Sixers.
