Uproar Over DDA’s Anti-Encroachment Drive in Kalkaji Slum Area; AAP Leader Atishi Slams BJP
New Delhi: A major political controversy has erupted over the Delhi Development Authority’s (DDA) ongoing anti-encroachment drive in the Bhoomihin (landless) camp of Kalkaji area in the national capital. The operation, aimed at removing illegal structures, has drawn sharp criticism from the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi, who directly targeted the BJP and DDA.
Atishi alleged, “Just three days ago, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta assured that no slum would be demolished. Yet today, the entire Bhoomihin camp has been cleared. If this isn’t a betrayal of that promise, then what is? Does the BJP want to forcefully evict the poor from their only shelter?”
She further condemned the drive as anti-poor and inhumane, stating that families who had no other roof over their heads were being evicted without any rehabilitation plan.
The DDA, accompanied by a large police contingent, carried out demolitions across a significant portion of the settlement, sparking fear and outrage among residents. Several affected families were seen protesting on the streets, demanding justice and immediate relief.
AAP leaders have demanded an immediate halt to the demolition drive and called for adequate rehabilitation for all displaced residents. They warned that if the BJP-led Centre and DDA continue such actions, AAP would take to the streets in protest.
So far, neither the DDA nor the BJP has issued an official statement in response to the allegations. However, it is evident that the situation in Kalkaji’s Bhoomihin camp is quickly becoming a hot-button issue in Delhi politics.
