West Bengal Government Approaches High Court to Seek Maximum Punishment for Sanjay Roy in RG Kar Case
Kolkata (West Bengal): The West Bengal government has approached the Calcutta High Court to seek the maximum punishment for Sanjay Roy, convicted in the RG Kar Hospital case. On Tuesday morning, Advocate General Kishore Dutt drew the attention of the bench comprising Justice Debanshu Basak and Justice Mohammad Shabbir Rashidi to the matter. The court has granted permission to hear the case.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed dissatisfaction on Monday with the life imprisonment sentence handed down by the Siahdah Court. Following the brutal assault and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Hospital on August 9, Mamata had taken to the streets demanding the death penalty for the accused.
In the judgment, Siahdah Court Judge Anirban Das stated, “Life imprisonment is the norm, while the death penalty is the exception.” He also wrote that the justice system should distance itself from vengeful tendencies such as “an eye for an eye” or “life for a life.”
