Chowna Mein Highlights Arunachal Pradesh’s Power Sector Priorities at Bharat Electricity Summit 2026 at Yashobhoomi Convention Centre, New Delhi

New Delhi : Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein participated in the Power Ministerial Meet (National) today at the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre, on the sidelines of the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026. The meeting was chaired by Union Minister of Power and Housing Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar.
The high-level meeting brought together senior leaders and experts to deliberate on key issues facing India’s power sector. Important discussions were held on the financial viability of DISCOMs, the Electricity Amendment Bill and National Electricity Policy, Resource Adequacy Planning, and the role of States in achieving the target of 100 GW nuclear capacity addition by 2047.
The Deputy Chief Minister stated that the meeting provided a valuable platform to exchange perspectives, share insights, and strengthen Centre-State collaboration to ensure reliable and sustainable power for all.
Subsequently, he also participated in the Ministerial Panel Discussion at Brahmkamal Hall during the summit, alongside Union Minister of State for Power, New & Renewable Energy, Shripad Naik and Power Minister of Goa, R M Dhavalikar, among other State representatives and subject experts.
During the panel discussion, he highlighted Arunachal Pradesh’s critical role in India’s clean energy transition, with an estimated 58,000 MW hydropower potential, accounting for more than 38% of the national total.
He outlined key challenges on Hydropower Project Implementation and the need to fast-track viable projects through CPSUs amid rising costs; Transmission Constraints and the Urgent requirement for enhanced intra-state and inter-state transmission capacity with Central support; Strengthening Intra-State Systems and Development of 220 kV and higher voltage networks to meet future demand; Synchronized Planning through Coordinated commissioning and power evacuation across river basins; Strengthening of roads, bridges, and enabling infrastructure including construction power to mitigate the Infrastructure Gaps; Policy Support through Extension of ISTS charge waiver beyond June 2028 up to 2035 to ensure tariff viability.
Mein further reiterated that Arunachal Pradesh remains committed to contributing significantly to India’s vision of a Viksit Bharat 2047, and called for continued collaboration, timely policy support, and strategic investments to unlock the State’s vast hydropower potential.
He was accompanied by Advisor to the GoAP, H K Paliwal, Commissioner (Hydropower) Sonam Chombay, Executive Director (PGCIL – Arunachal Pradesh) Pradeep Kumar, and other senior officers from the Hydropower Department during the Bharat Electrical Summit 2026.
