Doctor-Turned IPS Officer Mahesh Dixit Appointed as New Intelligence Bureau Chief, to Lead India’s Premier Spy Agency for Two Years

New Delhi: The Central Government has appointed senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Mahesh Dixit as the new Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), India’s premier domestic intelligence agency. He will succeed the current IB Director Tapan Deka, whose extended tenure concludes on June 30, 2026. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Dixit’s appointment for a two-year term.

From Doctor to IPS Officer

Mahesh Dixit is a 1993-batch IPS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre. Before joining the Indian Police Service, he was a qualified medical doctor, making his journey from medicine to law enforcement a remarkable one. He is currently serving as the Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau, the agency’s second-highest position.

Extensive Experience in Internal Security and Counter-Terrorism

Dixit brings decades of experience in internal security, intelligence operations, and counter-terrorism. According to officials, he has handled several critical assignments in some of India’s most sensitive regions.

He previously headed the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) in Jammu and Kashmir, where he played a key role in maintaining law and order and strengthening the security framework following the abrogation of Article 370. He has also overseen security operations related to the Northeast, Ladakh, and Left-Wing Extremism (Naxal-affected areas).

A Crucial Role in India’s Security Architecture

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) is India’s oldest and foremost domestic intelligence agency. It is responsible for gathering intelligence on terrorism, separatism, espionage, internal security threats, and issues affecting national security. The agency also provides intelligence support to central security agencies and state police forces.

With evolving security challenges, including cross-border terrorism, cyber threats, organized crime, and emerging internal security risks, Mahesh Dixit’s leadership is expected to further strengthen the agency’s operational capabilities.

Taking Over from Tapan Deka

Mahesh Dixit will succeed Tapan Deka, a 1988-batch IPS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, who was appointed Director of the Intelligence Bureau in 2022. Deka subsequently received two one-year extensions, completing an extended tenure before handing over the responsibility to Dixit.

Government’s Expectations

The government believes Mahesh Dixit’s vast intelligence experience, operational expertise in counter-terrorism, and deep understanding of national security challenges will play a significant role in enhancing India’s internal security framework. Over the next two years, he will lead the Intelligence Bureau in addressing a wide range of national security challenges and strengthening the country’s intelligence network.
