New Delhi: The first Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak Memorial Lecture was delivered today by renowned spiritual leader and scholar, Pujya Swami Avdheshanand Giri Ji Maharaj, who paid heartfelt tribute to the legendary social reformer and founder of the Sulabh sanitation movement, Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak.
Remembering Dr. Pathak’s extraordinary contributions to humanity, Swamiji described him as a true saint and visionary who dedicated his life to restoring dignity to millions. He highlighted Dr. Pathak’s unwavering commitment to cleanliness, eradication of untouchability, and upliftment of marginalized communities. Emphasizing the broader impact of his work, Swamiji noted that Dr. Pathak’s mission extended far beyond sanitation—it was a movement for human dignity, equality, and social transformation.
President of Sulabh International, Kumar Dilip, stated that the inaugural memorial lecture was not merely a commemorative event but a collective pledge to carry forward Dr. Pathak’s unfinished mission. “This lecture is a commitment to fulfill his dreams and to promote his vision of a more inclusive and dignified society,” he said.
On the occasion, Kumar Dilip also announced the institution of the ‘Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak Memorial Award’, which will be conferred annually starting from 2027. The award will include a cash prize of ₹11 lakh, along with a gold medal and a citation, to honour individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the fields of social reform, sanitation, and human dignity.
Sulabh International Convenor, Nitya Pathak, expressed her deep gratitude to Swami Avdheshanand Giri for delivering the inaugural lecture. She said his inspiring words have provided a new direction and will continue to guide efforts in advancing Dr. Pathak’s mission.
Vice President of Sulabh International, Dr. Sutirth Saharia, also reflected on the profound impact of Dr. Pathak’s life and work. He remarked that such individuals not only build institutions but reshape society’s understanding of dignity, compassion, and service. “Dr. Pathak did not just build toilets—he restored dignity. He did not merely talk about sanitation—he advocated social justice. His work was about human freedom,” he said.
A one-day conference on the “Sociology of Sanitation” was also held, bringing together professors, researchers, and scholars from universities across the country. The academic sessions were chaired by noted sociologist Prof. Neel Ratan, who elaborated on the concept pioneered by Dr. Pathak. Today, the subject is being studied in several universities, with numerous books and research publications inspired by his work.
Scholars presented research highlighting sanitation as a key driver of social change, public health, gender equality, and human dignity—core elements of Dr. Pathak’s lifelong mission.
The memorial lecture and academic conference marked a significant step in carrying forward Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak’s intellectual and humanitarian legacy, reaffirming Sulabh International’s commitment to promoting sanitation, social justice, and inclusive development.
