‘Pawan Khera’s Peda Is Inevitable’: Assam CM Himanta’s Sharp Jibe After BJP’s Massive Poll Victory

Guwahati: After the BJP-led NDA secured a resounding victory in the Assam Assembly elections, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took a sharp swipe at Congress leaders Pawan Khera and Gaurav Gogoi, saying, “Pawan Khera ka peda zaroor banega, ab aage-aage dekho aur kya hoga.”
The BJP won 82 seats in the Assembly polls, paving the way for the NDA to form the government in Assam for a third consecutive term. Following the landslide mandate, Sarma’s strong remarks on the election outcome have sparked widespread political discussion.
Reacting to allegations made by Congress leaders Pawan Khera and Gaurav Gogoi against his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the Chief Minister said he had made a commitment to respond politically.
“I had made a commitment regarding Pawan Khera. Now wait and watch what happens next. Once Himanta says something, he does not look back,” he said.
Commenting on Gaurav Gogoi’s defeat, Sarma said the Congress leader paid the political price for standing by what he termed “baseless allegations” against his wife.
“Had Pawan Khera not held that press conference with Gaurav Gogoi and levelled allegations against Assam’s daughter, perhaps he would not have lost. The allegations were not against me but against Assam’s daughter. The people of Assam have already made him into peda, and now I too have some responsibility to fulfil,” Sarma remarked.
Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi lost the Jorhat seat to BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami by 23,182 votes.
The controversy stems from allegations made by Khera and Gogoi claiming that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma possessed a foreign passport and owned property in Dubai. The claims could not be substantiated with evidence, and the matter eventually reached the Supreme Court, where Pawan Khera was recently granted bail.
Following BJP’s emphatic win, Sarma has continued his aggressive stance against the Congress leadership. His wife had earlier filed an FIR against Khera, calling the allegations false and defamatory.
In a recent interview with Times Now, when asked what message he wanted to send to Rahul Gandhi and Pawan Khera, Sarma responded with a sarcastic remark:
“Please come to Assam, meet Assam Police. You will be served tea and peda for breakfast. Cooperate with the police and tell them where you got those documents from.”
The statement has since gone viral, adding a fresh political edge to the post-election war of words in Assam.
