Uttar Pradesh Native Gyanendra Singh Malik Appointed as New Gujarat DGP
Gandhinagar: Senior IPS officer Gyanendra Singh Malik, a native of Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddha Nagar district, has been appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Gujarat. A 1993-batch IPS officer of the Gujarat cadre, Malik has officially assumed charge as the state’s top police officer.
Known for his extensive experience and professional integrity, Malik brings over three decades of policing expertise to the position. The Gujarat government has entrusted him with the leadership of the state’s police force, recognizing his long record of service across a wide range of assignments.
Strong Academic and Professional Background
Born in Bhatta Parsaul village in the Dankaur area of Gautam Buddha Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh, Gyanendra Singh Malik completed his B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from Banaras Hindu University (BHU). He later earned an LLB degree from Gujarat University.
Before his appointment as DGP, Malik was serving as the Police Commissioner of Ahmedabad, one of Gujarat’s most important and populous cities.
Vast Experience Across Gujarat
After completing his IPS training, Malik began his policing career as Additional Superintendent of Police in Bhuj. Over the years, he served in several districts, including Dang, Porbandar, Surendranagar, Ahmedabad Rural, Bharuch, and Kutch.
Following promotions, he held key positions as Range Inspector General in Ahmedabad, Surat, and Vadodara. He also served as the Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to the Governor of Gujarat and worked as Additional Commissioner of Police in Ahmedabad and Vadodara.
His extensive field experience has provided him with a deep understanding of Gujarat’s law-and-order landscape and administrative challenges.
Record in Police Recruitment
One of Malik’s notable achievements came during his tenure as Chairman of the Gujarat Police Recruitment Board, where he oversaw the recruitment of approximately 24,000 police constables.
He has also served in several specialized departments, including CID (Crime), Intelligence, the Anti-Corruption Bureau, and the Excise Department. In addition, he held responsibilities within the state’s Home Department, contributing to policy and administrative reforms.
Service with Central Government Agencies
Malik also served on deputation with the Government of India for several years. During this period, he worked with the Border Security Force (BSF), contributing to border security operations, and later served with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
Following his central deputation, he returned to Gujarat and was appointed Police Commissioner of Ahmedabad, where he played a key role in strengthening policing and public safety mechanisms in the city.
New Responsibilities Ahead
As the new DGP, Gyanendra Singh Malik will lead one of India’s most significant state police forces. His priorities are expected to include strengthening law and order, enhancing technology-driven policing, improving public safety, and further modernizing the Gujarat Police.
