Litchi Season in Its Final Stage: Enjoy the Taste Now or Wait Another Year

Muzaffarpur (Bihar) : The summer season in Bihar is often considered incomplete without the sweetness of litchi. Among all varieties, Muzaffarpur’s famous Shahi Litchi enjoys a special reputation for its unique flavor, aroma, and quality, earning recognition in markets across India and abroad. However, the litchi season is now gradually coming to an end, and the fruit is rapidly disappearing from local markets. Within the next few days, it may become difficult to find fresh litchis at all.

Why Litchis Cannot Remain on Trees for Long

Fruit experts explain that litchi is a highly sensitive fruit. Once it ripens, it cannot remain on the tree for an extended period. Because of its high juice content, the fruit tends to crack easily and becomes vulnerable to insect infestation. As a result, farmers are harvesting their orchards quickly and sending the produce to markets before quality begins to deteriorate.

With the arrival of the monsoon, the fruit’s quality starts declining. Litchis can begin to rot, and their distinctive taste gradually fades. This makes the current period one of the last opportunities for consumers to enjoy fresh litchis at their best.

Sold by the Kilogram in Patna, by the Hundred in Muzaffarpur Orchards

In major cities across Bihar, including Patna, litchis are currently retailing for around ₹120 to ₹150 per kilogram. What many consumers may not know is that in Muzaffarpur’s orchards, litchis are often sold not by weight but by the hundred fruits.

Depending on quality and size, orchard prices generally range between:

  • ₹80 per hundred
  • ₹60 per hundred
  • ₹50 per hundred

These rates are particularly attractive for bulk buyers and traders who purchase directly from growers.

How to Identify Genuine Shahi Litchi

Along the Patna–Muzaffarpur State Highway, hundreds of roadside vendors can be seen selling litchis during the peak season. However, buyers should exercise caution and know how to identify genuine Shahi Litchi.

Characteristics of Shahi Litchi:

  • Relatively larger fruit size
  • Small and thin seed
  • Thin skin
  • Exceptionally sweet taste and rich aroma

Characteristics of Chinese or Hybrid Varieties:

  • Large-sized fruit
  • Thicker skin
  • Larger seed
  • Slightly tangy flavor

Understanding these differences can help consumers avoid paying premium prices for inferior varieties.

Healthy, But Best Consumed in Moderation

Litchi is rich in vitamins, minerals, and natural sugars, making it a nutritious seasonal fruit. However, health experts advise moderation in consumption.

Children, in particular, are often advised not to eat litchis on an empty stomach. Excessive consumption may lead to health issues, including discomfort and urinary irritation in some individuals.

Traditional Method of Eating Litchi

In many villages, a traditional practice involves soaking freshly harvested litchis in water for some time before consumption. Locals believe this helps reduce the fruit’s natural heat and enhances its taste and freshness.

Be Careful When Buying Online

The popularity of Muzaffarpur’s Shahi Litchi has also led to a surge in online sales. However, consumers should remain cautious, as complaints occasionally emerge about ordinary or hybrid varieties being marketed as “Shahi Litchi.”

Buying from trusted and verified sellers remains the safest option.

Why Are Litchis Sold with Stems and Leaves?

Many customers complain that nearly 300–400 grams of stems and leaves are included in every kilogram of litchis sold in the market. However, there is a scientific reason behind this practice.

Litchis begin losing moisture within about 24 hours of being detached from the tree. Their skin starts turning brown, and the flavor gradually deteriorates. Keeping the fruit attached to stems and leaves helps preserve freshness for a longer period and reduces post-harvest damage.

Last Chance Before a Year-Long Wait

The litchi season has now entered its final stage. With the onset of rains over the next few days, market availability is expected to decline sharply.

For those who have not yet enjoyed this year’s harvest, now is the time to visit local markets or orchards and savor the sweetness of fresh Shahi Litchi. Once the season ends, consumers will have to wait another year to experience one of Bihar’s most celebrated summer fruits.

More than just a fruit, Muzaffarpur’s Shahi Litchi represents Bihar’s agricultural heritage, the hard work of its farmers, and the unmistakable taste of summer.
