Dissent Brewing Within Shiv Sena (UBT): Is Another Political Earthquake Looming in Maharashtra?

Mumbai/New Delhi: Maharashtra politics appears to be on the verge of yet another major upheaval. Following dramatic political developments in recent years, discussions of possible dissent and a split within Shiv Sena (UBT) have intensified. According to political circles and highly placed sources, several Members of Parliament belonging to Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) are reportedly unhappy with the party leadership and are exploring alternative political options for their future.
Sources suggest that seven Lok Sabha MPs from Shiv Sena (UBT) are believed to be in touch with the Shiv Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. However, no official confirmation has been issued either by the MPs concerned or by the leadership of the two rival factions. Nevertheless, speculation over a possible political realignment has become a major talking point in Maharashtra.
Political analysts believe that if such a split materializes, it could prove to be a significant setback for Uddhav Thackeray. It may weaken the political momentum the party gained after the Lok Sabha elections and create fresh organizational challenges. On the other hand, a successful expansion of the Shinde camp’s influence could further strengthen its position in Maharashtra politics.
It is expected that both factions will intensify efforts in the coming days to keep their MPs and legislators united. Political observers are closely watching whether these reports will remain mere speculation or develop into another major shift in Maharashtra’s political equations.
At present, uncertainty prevails in the state’s political landscape, with all parties fine-tuning their strategies ahead of upcoming local body and Assembly elections. If the claims made by sources prove correct, Maharashtra could once again witness the rewriting of its political equations.
Delhi Strategy Session: Meeting the Lok Sabha Speaker and Legal Maneuvering
To execute this alleged rebellion, the dissident camp is believed to have prepared a carefully planned and legally calibrated strategy.
Demand for Recognition as an Independent Group
Sources claim that all seven MPs may meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in New Delhi to formally seek recognition as a separate legislative group within Parliament.
Merger with the Shinde Faction
To avoid the complications of the Anti-Defection Law and the risk of losing their parliamentary membership, the MPs are reportedly planning to merge with Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena once recognition as a separate group is secured.
‘Secret’ Meeting at Shrikant Shinde’s Residence
Before taking the proposed political step, the MPs are said to have gathered at the official residence of MP Shrikant Shinde, son of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, in Delhi. Reports suggest that the Chief Minister himself participated in the strategic discussions, highlighting the seriousness of the development.
The Seven MPs at the Centre of the Political Storm
The seven leaders reportedly associated with the possible rebellion are influential figures with strong grassroots support in their respective regions.
1. Sanjay Dina Patil (Mumbai North-East)
A prominent political figure in Mumbai’s suburban belt, Sanjay Dina Patil has served as both MLA and MP. He is regarded as one of Shiv Sena (UBT)’s key strategists in the financial capital. Any move by him away from the Uddhav camp would represent a major organizational setback.
2. Sanjay Jadhav (Parbhani, Marathwada)
A veteran leader from Marathwada, Sanjay Jadhav has been elected to the Lok Sabha multiple times. He is considered an organizational pillar of the party in Parbhani and surrounding regions, with a strong hold over the traditional Shiv Sena cadre and voter base.
3. Rajabhau Prakash Waje (Nashik)
Representing Nashik in North Maharashtra, Rajabhau Waje previously served the Sinnar Assembly constituency. He has built a distinct political identity in the region and has consistently advocated issues such as sanitation workers’ welfare and rehabilitation of displaced communities.
4. Bhausaheb Rajaram Wakchaure (Shirdi)
Coming from the Shirdi Lok Sabha constituency in Ahmednagar district, Bhausaheb Wakchaure is known for his strong rural connect. A former MP from the same constituency, he has been vocal on issues related to agriculture, irrigation, and rural development.
5. Sanjay Uttamrao Deshmukh (Yavatmal-Washim, Vidarbha)
Sanjay Deshmukh is credited with maintaining Shiv Sena (UBT)’s presence in the strategically important Vidarbha region. With extensive political experience, his constituency is considered one of the party’s strongest bastions in eastern Maharashtra.
6. Nagesh Patil Ashtikar (Hingoli)
A former MLA and current MP from Hingoli, Nagesh Patil Ashtikar enjoys deep roots within the party’s grassroots structure. He is known among rural voters for actively raising issues concerning agriculture and irrigation.
7. Omraje Nimbalkar (Dharashiv)
Among the most popular young leaders in Marathwada, Omraje Nimbalkar has been elected to the Lok Sabha from Dharashiv (formerly Osmanabad) for a second consecutive term. His advocacy on issues such as drought, farmers’ distress, water scarcity, and youth unemployment has earned him significant support. Any shift in his political allegiance would be seen as a major emotional and political blow to Uddhav Thackeray.
Changing Equations: Is History Repeating Itself?
The current developments bear striking similarities to the events of 2022, when Eknath Shinde led a large-scale rebellion among Shiv Sena legislators that ultimately brought down the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.
If these seven MPs formally join the Shinde camp, Uddhav Thackeray’s party could be left with significantly reduced strength in the Lok Sabha. Such a shift has the potential to dramatically alter the political landscape ahead of the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly and local body elections, potentially reshaping the state’s power equations once again.
