By March 2025, 64% of Kolkata’s Iconic Yellow Taxis to be Phased Out
Kolkata (West Bengal): A significant 64% of Kolkata’s iconic yellow taxis will be phased out by March 2025, as part of a move by the state transport department to ban vehicles older than 15 years from the roads.
According to records from the state transport department, there are currently around 7,000 registered yellow taxis in the city. Of these, approximately 4,500, which fail to meet pollution norms, will be removed. All of these taxis are the iconic Ambassador models manufactured by Hindustan Motors Limited.
With Hindustan Motors having ceased production of the Ambassador model, replacing these taxis has become unfeasible. The history of Kolkata’s yellow taxis dates back to 1908, when they first appeared on the city’s streets, charging a fare of 50 paise per mile.
In 1962, the Kolkata Taxi Association adopted the Ambassador model as the standard for taxis. The yellow color was specifically chosen for its high visibility, even at night.
In recent years, the advent of app-based cab services has led to a decline in the popularity of yellow taxis. Despite this, the state transport department is considering ways to preserve their historical and emotional significance.
A transport department official stated, “Reviving the Ambassador model is not feasible, but taxi owners with old permits will be allowed to apply for permits for new commercial vehicles. If they wish to retain the yellow color for their new vehicles, special permission will be granted. However, this plan is still in the discussion stage and requires consultations with taxi associations.”
