Rain and Snow Expected in Himachal Pradesh from January 29 to February 1, Cold Wave to Intensify
Shimla: Himachal Pradesh is set to witness a change in weather starting January 29 due to the activation of a western disturbance. From January 29 to February 1, most areas in the state are likely to experience rainfall, with snowfall expected in the higher regions. This is likely to intensify the cold wave, resulting in a drop in both maximum and minimum temperatures. According to the Meteorological Center in Shimla, light to moderate rainfall is expected in mid-altitude areas, while higher-altitude regions of Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, and Kangra may experience snowfall.
75% Less Rainfall in January
The state has experienced an unusually dry January, with rainfall recorded at 75% below normal levels. This has raised concerns about drought-like conditions, worrying farmers and orchardists. Experts have warned that the lack of rain and snow in January could harm crops, especially apple orchards. Sufficient cold and moisture are crucial for crop development, and upcoming rainfall and snowfall may provide some much-needed relief.
Sunny Weather in Recent Days
The weather has been clear in the state over the past few days. On Sunday, sunshine brightened Shimla and other areas, leading to a rise in maximum temperatures. Foggy conditions in the plains have also dissipated during mornings and evenings. While clear weather is expected on January 27 and 28, an alert for cold waves has been issued for the next 24 hours in some regions.
Extreme Cold in Tribal Areas; Shimla Nights Warmer Than Plains
The temperature difference between the plains and hilly regions is evident. Tribal areas like Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, and parts of Chamba are experiencing severe cold, with temperatures consistently below freezing for the past two months. On Sunday, the minimum temperature in Kukumseri (Lahaul-Spiti) was recorded at -10.9°C.
Interestingly, Shimla nights are currently warmer compared to the plains. Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 8°C on Sunday, 4.4°C above normal. Meanwhile, temperatures in the plains were much lower: Sundernagar and Una recorded 1.9°C, Mandi 3.2°C, Kangra and Bilaspur 4°C, Dharamshala 5.9°C, and Nahan 7.1°C.
Frozen Water Sources in Tribal Areas
In the tribal districts of Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, and Pangi (Chamba), water sources like rivers, streams, and natural springs have frozen due to persistent sub-zero temperatures.
Tourists Await Snowfall
Himachal Pradesh is a popular destination for snow enthusiasts, attracting a large number of tourists annually. However, the lack of significant snowfall this year has resulted in fewer visitors to hill stations like Shimla, Manali, and Dalhousie, particularly after New Year celebrations.
