Dangerous Chinese Abir Being Sold in Kolkata, Authorities Intensify Vigilance Before Holi

Kolkata (West Bengal) : With Holi approaching, Kolkata Police and intelligence agencies have stepped up surveillance on the sale of cheap Chinese abir in the city and other parts of the state. According to intelligence sources, these abirs, illegally smuggled from China, are suspected to contain harmful chemicals that pose serious risks to both health and the environment.

Every year, the demand for abir and colors surges ahead of Holi and Dol Utsav, leading to large-scale sales in major markets, local shops, and roadside stalls. Some Indian businesses legally import high-quality abir from China. However, the concern lies with cheap, smuggled Chinese abir, which is being discreetly brought into Kolkata’s markets via Nepal, North Bengal, and Bihar.

Chinese Abir Flooding Kolkata Markets

Sources indicate that some traders in Burrabazar and other major commercial areas have stocked these low-cost Chinese abirs. In many cases, they are mixed with locally made abir or repackaged separately for sale.

Health Hazards of Chinese Abir

Experts warn that cheap Chinese abir is mostly made of synthetic dyes, containing toxic substances like talcum powder, lead, and mercury. These chemicals are especially prevalent in red, pink, and blue abir, leading to:

  • Skin and eye irritations
  • Respiratory problems when inhaled
  • Long-term health risks due to heavy metal exposure
  • Price Factor Driving Illegal Sales

Chinese abir is significantly cheaper than locally produced variants. While Indian abir costs ₹60-₹120 per kg, the Chinese version sells for just ₹30-₹50 per kg, making it a lucrative option for traders despite its risks.

Police Crackdown on Illegal Imports

Kolkata Police and intelligence agencies are taking strict action to curb the sale of these hazardous abirs. Special monitoring is in place at Burrabazar and other warehouses. Police officials have stated that these abirs are often stored in large sacks and can be sent for laboratory testing if necessary.

Authorities are urging citizens to buy only safe, certified colors to prevent health risks during the festival.
