VHP President Alok Kumar Raises Concerns on Census, Voter List Integrity, and Temple Control

New Delhi :  In a press statement issued by Shri Alok Kumar, National President of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), several key concerns and appeals were made regarding the upcoming census, the integrity of electoral rolls, and the control of Hindu temples by state governments.

Census and Hindu Unity
Shri Alok Kumar emphasized that the census process in India is being misused by certain vested interests to divide the larger Hindu community. He asserted that Hindutva is not limited to one prophet, one book, or one god, but rather encompasses the rich tapestry of spiritual traditions indigenous to India.

He cited Guru Basaveshwara, a revered spiritual leader who challenged orthodoxy, casteism, and ritualism, and promoted devotion to Lord Shiva, gender equality, and democratic values. The Veerashaiva-Lingayat community, he noted, holds a respected place within the broader Hindu society.

“The VHP recognizes and respects the unique identity of the Lingayats but affirms that they are an integral part of the Hindu tradition. We urge all Hindus to maintain this inclusive understanding during the upcoming census,” he stated.

Electoral Rolls in Bihar and Nationwide Appeal
Highlighting the ongoing voter list review in Bihar, Kumar underscored the importance of clean and accurate electoral rolls for the strength of Indian democracy.

“Every effort should be made to ensure that infiltrators do not find a place in the voter rolls, and that names of deceased or migrated voters are removed. The VHP appeals to the Election Commission to take this drive nationwide.”

Government Control of Hindu Temples
Addressing the issue of state control over Hindu temples, particularly in Karnataka, Alok Kumar condemned the discriminatory approach where only Hindu temples are governed and regulated, while mosques, churches, and gurdwaras remain free.

“The wealth of Hindu temples is being diverted to non-religious and even non-Hindu causes, which is unjust. It is time for temples to be returned to the Hindu society.”

To address this, the VHP will launch a nationwide campaign starting September 2, he announced. In the first phase, memorandums will be submitted to Chief Ministers and MLAs across the country, and public awareness events will be held with intellectuals in major cities.
