Hours of Rain Bring Delhi to a Standstill, Waterlogging Exposes Government Claims
New Delhi : Continuous rain since Thursday morning brought the national capital to a grinding halt, with waterlogging and traffic jams disrupting life in several parts of the city. From schoolchildren to office-goers, residents across low-lying areas struggled to navigate flooded streets.
Areas such as ITO, Minto Road, Rajpath, Mayur Vihar, Badarpur, Model Town, and Madipur turned into virtual lakes. Even outside metro stations, standing water caused inconvenience for commuters. Long traffic snarls left people stuck in their vehicles for hours.
The downpour dealt a severe blow to the Delhi government and municipal corporation’s claims of a waterlogging-free capital. Despite repeated assurances of drain cleaning and improved drainage systems before the monsoon, the rain laid bare the reality of the city’s infrastructure.
Locals lament that such scenes repeat every year, with authorities limiting themselves to paperwork rather than lasting solutions. The weather department has forecast light to moderate rain over the next 24 hours, raising fears that the situation may worsen.
A viral video from MB Road shows knee-deep water on the street, with vehicles inching forward through the floodwaters while some two-wheelers stalled and stood by the roadside.
Residents say waterlogging is a recurring problem in this area every monsoon, yet no permanent remedy has been implemented. The rain left many office-goers and schoolchildren facing severe inconvenience.
The meteorological department has warned that persistent showers in the coming hours could further aggravate the flooding situation.
