Social Worker Gets a New Life After Brain Surgery for Trigeminal Neuralgia

Mumbai : Doctors at Gleneagles Hospital successfully freed 56-year-old social worker Sushil Verma from unbearable pain through a critical brain surgery. For the past 10 years, he had been suffering from Trigeminal Neuralgia, considered one of the most excruciating pain disorders in the world.

Verma endured shock-like facial pain for years, undergoing multiple treatments—from tooth extractions to heavy medications—but nothing worked. The pain grew so severe that he stopped eating, speaking, and even smiling. Gradually, he slipped into depression and even contemplated ending his life.

The Surgery and the Medical Team
A team led by Dr. Nitin Dange, Director of Interventional Neurology and Head of Neurosurgery & Spine, along with Dr. Kunal Bhatia and Dr. Mayur Gharat, discovered that an artery was pressing against a nerve in his brain. They performed a Microvascular Decompression (MVD) surgery, relieving the pressure by placing a protective cushion. The three-hour procedure brought him instant relief.

Patient’s Relief and Doctors’ Message
Verma said, “For 10 years my life was hell. Today, I am living pain-free without medication—this is a new life for me.”

Dr. Dange noted that untreated cases may lead to weakness, weight loss, and mental stress, but timely MVD surgery can completely transform a patient’s life.

Gleneagles Hospital CEO Dr. Bipin Chevale added, “This case highlights the importance of timely diagnosis and advanced neurosurgery. Our mission is to provide cutting-edge treatment and hope for patients battling complex neurological disorders.”
