Bhupesh Baghel Accuses BJP of Opposing Reservations: “BJP is Anti-OBC, Ignoring Supreme Court Verdict”

New Delhi: Former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh and senior Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel launched a scathing attack on the BJP, accusing it of being anti-reservation and anti-OBC. He alleged that despite a significant verdict by the Supreme Court on June 25, 2025, neither the Central Government nor BJP-ruled states are implementing it, raising serious questions about the BJP’s intentions.

Speaking to the media, Baghel said: “The BJP is against reservations and against the backward classes. The most recent proof of this is the Supreme Court’s June 25 judgment, which issued clear directives. Yet, the BJP-led governments are refusing to act on it.”

Citing the example of Madhya Pradesh, he said: “In 1994, the Digvijaya Singh-led Congress government provided 14% reservation to the backward classes. In 2003, this was increased to 27%, but neither the Uma Bharti government nor the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government implemented it. Later, Kamal Nath brought in an ordinance for 27% reservation, which was passed in the Assembly and signed by the Governor, but the government was toppled. Now, under Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, the same delay continues.”

Baghel further mentioned that in Chhattisgarh, under his leadership: “On December 2, 2022, our government unanimously approved 27% reservation for the backward classes. The then Governor said she would study the matter. Even after a change in the Governor, the so-called study is still ongoing.”

The Congress leader also alleged that the BJP only uses backward communities as a vote bank and fails to take any concrete steps for their welfare.
Calling the Supreme Court’s verdict “historic,” Baghel emphasized: “The ruling allows for sub-categorization of backward communities by the states. But when it comes to implementation, BJP governments maintain complete silence.”

He concluded with a firm statement: “We will continue our fight, because this is a battle for social justice — and the BJP cannot be allowed to ignore it.”

Baghel’s remarks have reignited the political tussle between Congress and BJP over reservations and social equity, bringing the issue back into sharp national focus.
