Chowna Mein participates on World Environment Day 2025 and Flags Off Electric Bus Fleet to Promote Green Mobility
Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh) : On the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein participated in a state-level observation held at the Golden Jubilee Banquet Hall, Itanagar, organized by the Department of Environment, Forest & Climate Change on the theme – ‘Ending Plastic Pollution Globally’, emphasizing urgent action towards sustainable environmental practices.
In his address, Mein highlighted the pivotal role of awareness and individual responsibility in fostering environmental conservation. He urged citizens to adopt the 5 R’s – Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rethink, as integral principles in daily life to combat plastic pollution and preserve natural resources.
Drawing attention to Arunachal Pradesh’s rich natural heritage, Mein noted the State’s exceptional 79.33 % forest cover, underscore its crucial contribution to India’s ecological balance and biodiversity conservation. “Arunachal Pradesh is not only richly endowed with natural resources but also carries the responsibility to set an example in environmental stewardship,” he stated.
As part of the celebrations, the Deputy Chief Minister hail the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, encouraging citizens to plant trees in honor of their mothers and Mother Earth, fostering a deep ecological and emotional connection.
Recognizing community-led sustainability efforts, Mein felicitated the mother-daughter duo, Smt. Nabam Hekam and Ms. Kara Nayum, for their innovative work under the Waste to Wealth initiative, which promotes creative reuse of plastic waste. Ms. Kara Nayum was also honored for her outstanding essay on climate action, exemplifying the vital role of youth in environmental advocacy.
Later, DCM flagged-off of a fleet of electric buses signalling a significant step towards clean and green public transportation in Arunachal Pradesh. This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions, decrease dependence on fossil fuels, and provide eco-friendly mobility solutions. The electric bus service will enhance urban connectivity in Itanagar as well as in the towns of Namsai, Tezu, Pasighat, and Roing. These electric buses were introduced by the Department of Transport, Govt of Arunachal Pradesh.
Also present in the occasion were Minister Transport, Ojing Tasing, Speaker APLA, Tesam Pongte, Advisors Wanglin Lowangdong, Chakat Aboh, and Ninong Ering, Mayor IMC, Tamme Phassang, Chief Secretary, Manish Kumar Gupta and PCCF & HoFF(EF&CC), P Subramaniam, among others.
