NCW Strongly Condemns Derogatory Remarks Against Colonel Sophia Qureshi, Appeals for Respect Towards Women

New Delhi: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has strongly condemned the derogatory remarks made against Army officer Colonel Sophia Qureshi. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, without naming any individual, stated that insensitive and disrespectful comments against women are completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Though Rahatkar did not take any names, her statement comes amid public outrage following alleged comments made by Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah regarding Colonel Qureshi. The Congress party had shared a video in which Shah can allegedly be heard saying:
“Those who shattered the sindoor (symbol of marriage) of our daughters… we sent their sister and gave them a fitting reply.”

This statement triggered sharp reactions from various sections of society.

Colonel Sophia is a proud daughter of the nation: Vijaya Rahatkar

Rahatkar stated, “Colonel Sophia Qureshi is a proud daughter of the nation. She has served the country with courage, dedication, and commitment. Making derogatory remarks against such brave individuals is not just an insult to them but to all daughters of the nation.”

She further added that such statements not only hurt the dignity of women serving in the Indian Armed Forces but also undermine the broader respect for women in society.

Ignoring women’s contributions is against national interest

Highlighting the recent CBSE exam results, Rahatkar pointed out that girls have outperformed boys in several categories. She emphasized the need to encourage women to step forward and lead in every sector for a progressive nation.

She further remarked, “Undermining the participation and contribution of women is not only unacceptable but also hinders the overall development of the country.”

Shah responds, says ready to apologize

Amid rising controversy, Minister Vijay Shah offered a clarification, stating that if his words have hurt the sentiments of any community or religion, he is ready to apologize ten times over.

It is noteworthy that Colonel Sophia Qureshi was recently part of the team involved in “Operation Sindoor,” which presented India’s stance firmly on the global stage. Her role has been widely appreciated across the country.

In conclusion, the National Commission for Women has urged society to respect women serving the nation and ensure that female officers receive honor, not humiliation, in return for their commitment and service.
