Nepali Congress, Coalition Partner of Oli Government, Criticizes China’s Policies

Kathmandu :  Nepali Congress, a coalition partner in KP Oli’s government, has expressed displeasure with China’s policies regarding Nepal. Gagan Thapa, General Secretary of the Nepali Congress, strongly criticized China’s approach toward Nepal during a book launch event on Monday.

Thapa alleged that every Chinese government delegation visiting Nepal follows a dual approach. He pointed out that when Chinese ambassadors or delegations meet with non-communist parties in Nepal, they emphasize equal relations with all political parties. However, when they meet with communist parties, they push for communist unity, exerting pressure to consolidate all communist factions into a single entity.

The Nepali Congress General Secretary stated that China’s foreign policy is difficult to comprehend, as it directly interferes in Nepal’s internal affairs. He claimed that when a communist-led government is in power, China openly supports it and promises extensive assistance. However, its attitude changes when a different party takes charge.

Speaking at the same event, journalist and author Sudheer Sharma also expressed concerns about China’s growing interference in Nepal’s domestic politics. He warned that this intervention is not in Nepal’s best interest, and if Nepal doesn’t oppose it, the country may soon witness the emergence of pro-America and pro-India political factions.
