Shyam Lal College Wins Opening Match of 11th Padma Shri Shyam Lal Memorial Hockey Tournament

 

New Delhi: Host team Shyam Lal College (Morning) began the 11th Padma Shri Shyam Lal Memorial Invitational Hockey Tournament with a victory, defeating Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education and Sports Science 4-2 in the men’s category.

The tournament was inaugurated by Professor Balaram Pani, Dean of Colleges, Delhi University, and former Olympian Ashok Dhyan Chand as the chief guests. Welcoming the guests and players, Professor Ravi Narayan Kar, Principal of Shyam Lal College, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to promoting sports.

For Shyam Lal College, Praveen scored two goals and was awarded Player of the Match, while Lalit and Mohit contributed one goal each. For the losing team, Pulkit scored both goals.

Former Olympian Ashok Dhyan Chand expressed his deep connection with the college, saying, “I have a 50-year-old bond with Shyam Lal College. It brings me great joy to see hockey and other sports being actively promoted here. I feel like picking up a hockey stick and stepping onto the field myself!”

On this occasion, Dronacharya Award-winning coach N.S. Saini was also honored.

The tournament will continue until February 17, 2025, featuring the top men’s and women’s teams from Delhi University.

V.S. Jaggi, Convener of the Shyam Lal College Sports Committee, expressed gratitude to all participants and guests.

Last year, Shyam Lal College won the men’s championship, while Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education and Sports Science emerged as the women’s champions.

This year, ten men’s teams and six women’s teams are competing in a league-cum-knockout format. The top two teams will face off in the final.

A Player of the Match award is being given after each game.
