Yamuna on the Rise, Several Areas in Delhi-Noida Submerged
New Delhi : The Yamuna River is flowing above the danger mark, creating flood-like situations in the national capital and adjoining regions. Waterlogging in low-lying areas has worsened people’s hardships. Even the Shri Swaminarayan Temple in the Civil Lines area has been submerged. Floodwaters entering several parts of the capital have disrupted traffic and daily life.
At the old railway bridge in Delhi, the Yamuna’s water level was recorded at 207.33 meters at 7 a.m. on Friday, compared to 207.48 meters a day earlier. According to official data, the level was 207.35 meters at 6 a.m. today. Authorities expect the level to drop further during the day.
However, in recent days, the Yamuna’s surge has wreaked havoc in low-lying areas of Delhi. Several houses were inundated, residents were displaced, and businesses severely affected.
Despite the water level showing signs of decline, normalcy is yet to return. Floodwaters entered relief camps in Mayur Vihar Phase-1 and Yamuna Bazar, worsening the plight of already displaced families.
In northeast Delhi’s Usmanpur, some residents along with their pets and a cow were trapped on the third embankment. While the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) refused to conduct the rescue, teams from the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and the Boat Club managed to bring everyone, including the cow, to safety. Cows are also being shifted to safer locations from a cowshed near the Loha Pul area.
Officials stated that conditions in North, Southeast, and Shahdara districts remain stable. However, in Central Delhi, DDMA and Boat Club teams rescued four elderly people, all above 80 years of age, from 9 Upper Bela Road.
The situation is worst in Civil Lines, where roads turned into drains and several houses were submerged in dirty water. This area is particularly sensitive as it houses the Lieutenant Governor, Chief Minister, and several Cabinet Ministers.
Local residents alleged that whenever the Yamuna’s water level crosses 205.33 meters, such conditions arise. They accused authorities of failing to make proper preparations this time as well, leaving citizens to face severe difficulties.
Meanwhile, the river’s rising levels continue to pose a flood threat. In Noida Sector-135, heavy waterlogging was reported. The administration has intensified relief and rescue operations in affected areas, urging residents to remain cautious.
