Hindu Man Beaten to Death Again in Bangladesh

Dhaka: The wave of deadly violence against Hindus in Bangladesh continues. In the Hussendanga area of Rajbari district, attackers allegedly beat a Hindu youth, Amrit Mondal (29), to death. According to sources, late Wednesday night Amrit was travelling on a motorcycle with a companion when villagers ambushed and caught them. Both were brutally assaulted. Amrit died early Thursday morning during treatment, while his companion, Salim Sheikh, is in critical condition.
Villagers have alleged that Amrit and Salim had come to the village to extort money from a local resident named Shahidul. After an alarm was raised, the two reportedly tried to flee on their motorcycle, following which they were caught and beaten.
Notably, this is the second incident within a week in which a Hindu youth has been beaten to death in Bangladesh. On December 19, in Mymensingh, a mob of rioters allegedly killed a Hindu Dalit youth, Dipuchandra Das, after accusing him of blasphemy. His body was reportedly hung from a tree and set on fire.
Amrit Mondal, also known locally as Samrat, was a resident of Hosendanga village in the Pangsha area of Rajbari. Police and local residents told The Daily Star that he was allegedly a member of a criminal gang and had long been involved in extortion and other criminal activities. Authorities said multiple cases, including murder charges, were pending against him.
A report in the Bengali daily Prothom Alo stated that the 29-year-old Amrit Mondal had allegedly formed a gang in his own name, which, according to police and several locals, operated as a “terrorist organisation” in the area, engaging in intimidation, extortion, and other criminal activities. Police said one of Mondal’s associates, Mohammad Salim, has been arrested in connection with the case, and weapons were recovered from his possession.
Police have claimed that the deceased Amrit Mondal was notorious by the name Samrat and ran an extortion gang called “Samrat Bahini” in the Hussendanga area. He reportedly had two criminal cases against him, including murder. Amrit’s brother, Omiyo, said the family had severed ties with him nearly ten years ago.
