World Cancer Day Observed at Tomo Riba Institute of Health & Medical Sciences, Papum Pare

Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh) : On the occasion of World Cancer Day, Mera Yuva Bharat, Papum Pare, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India, organised an awareness and outreach programme at the Department of Oncology, Tomo Riba Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), Papum Pare, with the aim of spreading awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and compassionate care.
As a gesture of solidarity and encouragement, apples were distributed to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and palliative care at the Oncology Department. The interaction brought warmth and hope to patients and their families during a challenging phase of their lives.
A special interactive awareness session was conducted by Dr. Sam Sering, Radiological Oncologist, Department of Oncology, TRIHMS, who sensitised patients, caregivers, youth volunteers and attendees on:
Different types of cancer, including cervical cancer
The importance of early detection and timely treatment
Cancer-preventive vaccines, especially those that can be administered at early stages to prevent certain cancers
The fact that with proper medical care and lifestyle changes, cancer is treatable and in many cases curable
Dr. Sering also emphasised the urgent need to spread awareness among the masses, as a large section of society remains unaware of early symptoms, preventive measures and available treatments.
The programme was organised in association with Let’s Speak Arunachal NGO, led by its Founder Ms. Porsum Ori, along with her dedicated team of volunteers. The youth organisation All Arunachal Youth for Nature Response, led by Founder Mr. Taka Dominic, also actively participated, with their volunteers assisting in patient interaction and apple distribution.
The programme was further graced by the presence of the Abhishek Mandal ,Deputy Director, Mera Yuva Bharat, Papum Pare, along with Mr. Subhash, who shared their experiences of working with youth in social and health awareness initiatives and highlighted the role of young people in building a healthier and more informed society.
Through this initiative, Mera Yuva Bharat, Papum Pare reaffirmed its commitment to promoting youth-led social responsibility, health awareness, and compassionate service, especially for those battling life-threatening illnesses.
The observance of World Cancer Day at TRIHMS served as a reminder that awareness, early detection, and collective community support can save lives.
