Venezuela Earthquake : Massive Destruction After Powerful Quakes, Large-Scale Casualties Feared; India Assures Support

Caracas: Two powerful earthquakes that struck the South American nation of Venezuela have caused widespread devastation, leaving several buildings and homes collapsed and raising fears of significant loss of life. Local authorities have launched large-scale rescue and relief operations as emergency teams continue to assess the extent of the damage.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the first earthquake measured 7.1 in magnitude and was centered west of the city of Morón on Venezuela’s Caribbean coast, approximately 168 kilometers from the capital, Caracas. The quake occurred at a depth of 13 kilometers.
Just minutes later, a stronger 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck the region. The epicenter of the second quake was located about 16 kilometers southwest of Morón at a depth of 10 kilometers, intensifying the destruction across affected areas.
Reports from several regions indicate severe structural damage, with numerous buildings reduced to rubble. Authorities have also issued a tsunami alert for coastal areas as a precautionary measure. Following the disaster, several countries, including the United States, have offered assistance to Venezuela.
PM Modi Expresses Condolences, Offers Assistance
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the devastation caused by the earthquakes in Venezuela. In a message posted on social media platform X, he conveyed condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
The Prime Minister stated that India stands in solidarity with the people and government of Venezuela during this difficult time and is ready to provide all possible assistance if required.
Interior Minister Urges Citizens to Remain Vigilant
Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said that the tremors were felt across several states of the country. He noted that serious incidents, including damage to residential and commercial structures, had been reported in various areas, including Altamira in Caracas.
Cabello urged residents to remain in open spaces for the time being, warning that aftershocks could occur and further weaken already damaged buildings. He also indicated that several people had sustained injuries in the disaster.
Appealing to motorists, the Interior Minister requested that roads be kept clear to allow ambulances and emergency response vehicles to move freely. Speaking on state television, he said rescue and relief operations were being carried out under established emergency protocols to ensure timely assistance reaches those most in need.
He also called on citizens to take special care of children and elderly people, stay in touch with neighbors, and assist anyone who may have been affected by the disaster.
