Tonight Will Be Special: Rare Combination of Dhruva and Ravi Yoga on Sharad Purnima

New Delhi: On the auspicious occasion of Ashwin Shukla Purnima, the festival of Sharad Purnima will be celebrated across the country with great enthusiasm on October 16. This year’s Sharad Purnima is particularly special as, after two years, the rare combination of Dhruva Yoga and Ravi Yoga under the Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra is occurring. The Sharad Purnima date starts today at 7:47 PM and will continue until the evening of October 17 at 5:34 PM. However, the full moon bathing and charity rituals will be observed on October 17.

According to religious and mythological beliefs, the moon showers its nectar-like rays on the Earth with all its sixteen phases on this night. These rays are believed to have medicinal properties that can cure incurable diseases. It is said that the “kheer” (a sweet rice pudding) kept under the moonlight on this night acquires nectar-like qualities, enhancing health, love, and wealth.

Sharad Purnima also holds special significance as it is believed that Lord Krishna performed the divine dance, Maha Raas, on this night. It is also said that Goddess Lakshmi was born on this night, making her worship particularly auspicious. It is believed that she descends from heaven to Earth, and those who worship her on this night receive blessings of prosperity and happiness. Reciting the Shri Suktam and lighting ghee lamps are also considered auspicious.

In the Mithilanchal region, there is a tradition called “Kojagara” observed in newlywed households. During this festival, kheer is prepared and placed under the moonlight, then offered to the deity before being consumed as prasad (blessed food).

According to religious scriptures, donating to the poor and needy on this day is of special significance. Donations of milk, yogurt, rice, and other items are believed to bring blessings. This year’s Sharad Purnima is unique and special, filled with the moon’s nectar-like rays and auspicious celestial alignments.
