Ravindra Nath Mahato Elected Jharkhand Assembly Speaker Unopposed

Ranchi: On the second day of the Jharkhand Assembly session, Ravindra Nath Mahato was re-elected as the Speaker of the Assembly for the second consecutive term on Tuesday. Mahato, a four-time MLA from the Nala constituency, was elected unopposed, breaking the myth that no sitting Speaker gets re-elected as an MLA.

As the session began, Chief Minister Hemant Soren proposed Mahato’s name for the Speaker’s position, seconded by Mathura Mahato. Following this, the Assembly unanimously declared Ravindra Nath Mahato as the Speaker.

This marks the second time Mahato has assumed the role of Speaker. Despite the tradition that sitting Speakers often do not return as MLAs, Mahato has defied the odds. The only other instance of this was when CP Singh managed a similar feat, but Mahato has gone a step further by being re-elected as Speaker.

On Monday, Mahato filed his nomination for the Speaker’s post with seven sets of proposers and seconders. In the first set, Chief Minister Hemant Soren was the proposer, with Mathura Prasad Mahato as the seconder. The second set featured Radha Krishna Kishore as the proposer and Rameshwar Oraon as the seconder.
In the subsequent sets, notable figures such as Suresh Paswan, Naresh Singh, Arup Chatterjee, Chandra Dev Mahato, Babulal Marandi, CP Singh, Saryu Roy, Janardan Paswan, Jayaram Mahato, and Nirmal Mahato supported his nomination.

Political Journey of Ravindra Nath Mahato

Mahato first won the Nala Assembly seat in 2005. However, he faced defeat in the 2009 Assembly elections. He made a strong comeback by winning the elections consecutively in 2014, 2019, and 2024. Ravindra Nath Mahato’s re-election as Speaker highlights his significant influence and acceptance across political lines in the Jharkhand Assembly.
