Delhi Assembly Election 2025 : Voting on February 5, Results on February 8; Model Code of Conduct Enforced
New Delhi: The Election Commission has announced the dates for the Delhi Assembly elections. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar informed that voting in Delhi will take place in a single phase. The polling date is set for February 5, and the results will be declared on February 8. With this announcement, the model code of conduct has come into effect in Delhi. The primary contest in the capital is expected to be between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), although the Congress is also entering the fray with full vigor.
The term of the 70-member Delhi Assembly ends on February 23, necessitating elections for the formation of a new House before then. Traditionally, Delhi has always held assembly elections in a single phase. The AAP, which has been under fire due to corruption allegations, is aiming for a hat trick. The party, led by Arvind Kejriwal, secured landslide victories in the 2015 and 2020 elections, winning 67 and 62 seats, respectively.
Meanwhile, the BJP, which was reduced to single-digit seat counts in the last two elections, is hoping for a comeback in the national capital after 26 years. The Congress, which once ruled Delhi for 15 consecutive years, is contesting this election alone after aligning with the AAP for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This first election of 2025 is being viewed as a battle of prestige for all three major parties.
Last year, Kejriwal resigned as Chief Minister following bail in the liquor policy case, stating that he would return to the role when the people of Delhi reposed their faith in him again. This time, the AAP is counting on welfare schemes targeting women and senior citizens to combat anti-incumbency sentiments and outdo its rivals.
