India Defeats Bangladesh by 280 Runs in Chennai Test, Takes 1-0 Lead in Series

Chennai: The Indian cricket team secured a commanding 280-run victory over Bangladesh in the first Test of the two-match series on Sunday. The match, held at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, saw India dominate from the start. After losing the toss, India posted a solid 376 in their first innings. Bangladesh, in response, could only manage 149 runs. With a 227-run lead, India declared their second innings at 287/4, setting a daunting target of 515 runs for Bangladesh. On Day 4, Bangladesh’s second innings ended at 234, handing India a 1-0 lead in the series. The second Test will be played in Kanpur from September 27.

Bangladesh resumed their innings on Sunday at 158/4, with skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan trying to steady the ship. The duo added 35 runs in the first hour without losing a wicket, but the match turned after the drinks break. Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Shakib for 25, and Ravindra Jadeja followed by sending Litton Das back for just 1. Ashwin continued his fine form, claiming Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 8, marking his 37th five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Jadeja then trapped Shanto, who top-scored with 82, while Ashwin and Jadeja cleaned up the tail to bowl Bangladesh out for 234.

India Declares Second Innings at 287/4

India declared their second innings after reaching 287/4, with superb centuries from opener Shubman Gill and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant. Pant scored 109 from 128 balls, smashing 13 fours and 4 sixes, while Gill remained unbeaten on 119 off 176 balls, hitting 10 fours and 4 sixes. KL Rahul added an unbeaten 22 from 19 deliveries, while Rohit Sharma (5), Yashasvi Jaiswal (10), and Virat Kohli (17) contributed small scores. For Bangladesh, Mehidy Hasan Miraz took 2 wickets, while Taskin Ahmed and Nahid Rana claimed one each.

Bangladesh Struggles in First Innings

Bangladesh’s first innings folded for 149, with only Shakib Al Hasan (32), Litton Das (22), and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (27*) making notable contributions. Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah led the attack with 4 wickets, while Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravindra Jadeja picked up 2 wickets each.

India’s First Innings Highlighted by Ashwin’s Century

In India’s first innings, Ravichandran Ashwin stole the show with a stellar 113 off 133 balls, including 11 fours and 2 sixes. Ravindra Jadeja supported him with a well-played 86, hitting 10 fours and 2 sixes. Yashasvi Jaiswal added 56, while Rishabh Pant contributed 39. Bangladesh’s Hasan Mahmud took 5 wickets, with Taskin Ahmed grabbing 3 and Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Nahid Rana each picking up 1.

India’s victory by 280 runs gives them a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The final Test is set to begin on September 27 in Kanpur.
