IPS Probationers Meet President Draupadi Murmu
New Delhi: A group of Indian Police Service (IPS) probationers from the 2023 batch (76 RR) met President Draupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday. During the meeting, President Murmu emphasized that without maintaining law and order, ensuring justice, and protecting citizens’ rights, progress is meaningless. She reminded the officers that the ‘S’ in ‘IPS’ stands for ‘Service.’
President Murmu highlighted the special significance of the Indian Police Service among various all-India services. She pointed out that law and order are not only the cornerstone of governance but also the foundation of a modern state. In many situations and places, IPS officers will be the face of the state for citizens, representing their first contact with the state’s administrative machinery.
As India aims to achieve new heights in the coming years, the role of IPS officers becomes increasingly critical, she said. Economic and social development are only possible when the rule of law prevails. Without maintaining law and order, ensuring justice, and protecting the rights of citizens, progress becomes meaningless.
The President expressed happiness over the sharp increase in the number of women IPS officers in recent years. She stated that their growing presence could enhance the overall character of policing, improve police-community relations, and benefit the nation.
President Murmu also discussed how advancements in technology have aided policing, including in crime prevention and detection. However, she cautioned that criminals and terrorists are also leveraging technology. In a world where cybercrime and cyber warfare are on the rise, IPS officers are expected to stay tech-savvy and remain a step ahead of offenders.
The President acknowledged the immense responsibilities that come with the IPS role, which can sometimes be highly stressful. She advised the officers not to neglect their mental health and encouraged them to incorporate yoga, pranayama, and relaxation techniques into their daily routines. She reminded them once again that the ‘S’ in ‘IPS’ stands for ‘Service’—their primary motto should be to serve the nation and its citizens.
